When it comes to fruit flies, we often know tips to get rid of them. We set up a bottle with apple cider vinegar in the kitchen, or plant matches with sulfur in the soil of plants and spray black soap. However, the ideal is still to prevent the installation of these little pests in the house. And to limit the proliferation of these undesirable insects, especially numerous with the arrival of the warmer days, natural remedies are also numerous! Attracted by moisture, odors, food, and heat, and with very rapid laying capacities, it is better to act quickly. So, discover all the right actions to avoid swarms of fruit flies at home.
1) Don’t leave dirty dishes lying around
Dirty dishes as well as countertops have crumbs and food residues that these little flies love. So, it is out of the question to leave the dishes on the edge of the sink! Therefore, do not wait indefinitely. Clean systematically every plate, table, or countertop you used to cook. This way, they will not be tempted to settle in!
2) Hunt down stagnant water to avoid fruit flies
All sources of moisture are highly prized by these little creatures. This is why we often see clouds of insects around the sink or plants that have just been watered. Therefore, you must not leave any traces of stagnant water in the house. This includes water in the sink, the saucers of plant pots, and even a simple glass of water forgotten on the counter. Be very strict! In addition, stagnant water also attracts mosquitoes. So, by eliminating them, you will kill two birds with one stone.
3) Take care of your trash can
Its bad smells are not appetizing for you. However, fruit flies have a different opinion! If you are looking for ways to eliminate these squatters, you will have to take care of the trash can. Opt for a model with a flap or lid that you will always keep closed. And above all, empty your trash cans more often. This will prevent the formation of unpleasant odors and mold. The flies and fruit flies will be less tempted! In case of infestation, make a point of cleaning the trash can and its lid more often. Vinegar is ideal here. You can then use charcoal, clay, or litter to absorb odors and moisture. Also, think about using essential oils on a cotton ball to fragrance the trash can.
4) Don’t leave food out if you want to avoid fruit flies
Once you have finished using a food item, store it in the fridge right away. If food leftovers are left out on the counter for too long, they will quickly attract these little bugs. And this is even more true for food items without packaging (food wrap, etc.). There are then even more odors. Therefore, it is best to only take out food items when you are using them and to store them the rest of the time. If they do not go in the refrigerator, investing in airtight boxes or jars will help limit odors in the kitchen. This will also prevent food moths and cockroaches. As for fruit and vegetable peels, throw them away immediately after cooking, again to limit odors and not leave them with accessible food. Finally, regarding red and white wine, do not leave open bottles without a cork.
